Considerations for Lab-based Courses

Experiential learning is a core component of a Drexel education. During this unprecedented move to emergency remote instruction due to the coronavirus, one of the biggest challenges is figuring out how to replicate experiential learning opportunities in an online space. Here are some suggestions and strategies as you continue to consider this challenge.

Use Kits

  • A number of companies sell kits that students can use at home. Students can perform experiments and send a picture of their experience, along with their results, as part of their assignment submission. Here are some options of companies that make lab kits:
    • - HOL
    • - Quality Science Labs, LLC

Use Existing Datasets

  • Depending on the learning goals of your course, use of existing datasets may be appropriate for your students. For example, students could make observations or perform analyses of these existing datasets. While you could provide data from your own work or the work of your colleagues, you could also make use of other existing datasets such as these:
    • - iNaturalist
    • - Data Nuggets

Use Virtual Laboratory Options or Simulations

  • Instead of creating your own labs, you can use existing virtual lab options or simulations that are available from a large number of sources. Here are some options:

Biology and Environmental Sciences

  • - Free one-month trial by PraxiLabs
  • - Visible Body offers a collection of resources for teaching and learning in anatomy and physiology courses, typically at a cost to educators. However, they are currently offering free courseware to instructors until June 30, 2020.
